Armour + Evening Dress at Tinguely Museum

Armour + Evening Dress at Tinguely Museum Video Clips. Duration : 7.38 Mins.

www.vernissage.tv | In 1991, the exhibition Dresses like Armour was shown in the Neue Hofburg in Vienna. The presentation of splendid Viennese state armour paired with evening dresses by the couturier Roberto Capucci has prompted the present project at the Tinguely Museum in Basel to revive within a larger context the glorious profession of the armourer. On the basis of pieces of armour mainly from the armoury in Graz, flanked by contemporary designers dresses and war props by Tinguely, Spoerri and Luginbühl, the exhibition is a celebration and parody of military history (from 1315 to 1991) and haute couture that is worn as a second skin. From the days of the prestigious profession of the armourer down to the entourage of the declared amateur locksmith Tinguely the development leads to the central issue of the hinge the malleability of iron. Home to the works of the self-declared amateur metalworker Jean Tinguely, the Museum hosts within its walls examples of the prominent schools and craft of the plate armourer, in a presentation of menswear fashioned of steel for war, tournament and the parade ground. Modern female styles are represented by the couturier Roberto Capucci, and works by Eva Aeppli and Niki de Saint Phalle as well as figurines by Oskar Schlemmer lend an existential component to this world stage. All this to be shown under the eye of all sorts of war props by Tinguely, Luginbühl and Spoerri, as well as a comic strip Apocalypse by MS Bastian: a survey of ...

The Naadam Archery competition

The Naadam Archery competition Tube. Duration : 0.48 Mins.

For centuries the national sport of archery has been enjoyed by Mongolian men and women, young and old: in fact it is not known which came first for the steppeland residents of Central Asia - the wheel or the bow. Thanks to the long shooting range of their bows, Mongolian warriors were out of danger while showering the enemy on tall fortress walls with lots of arrows. There is a memorable inscription on the Chingis Khan Stone, a inscribed monument dating back to the early 13th Century. It says that in 1225, a Mongolian archer, Esukhei, took part in a warriors' competition, hitting the target from a distance of 335 ald (which means that the bow's shooting range which was in excess of half a kilometre). When preparing for a campaign, every mediaeval Mongolian warrior would carry a spear, sabre, halberd and cudgel, plus two or three spare quivers with 30 arrows in each. There were several kinds of arrows differing in weight, length, thickness and design. Some were meant for powerful bows -- their tips were 15 cm long and 3.5 cm wide. They were capable of piercing thick armour. There were also short and long-range, double-tipped, signal, incendiary and whistling arrows (with holes in the tips to produce a sharp whistle in flight to terrorize the enemy.) Ten natural materials were used to manufacture ancient bows including birch bark, fish glue, bamboo, deer antlers, natural silk threads and animal tendons. Archery competitions were among the Mongols' traditional amusements at ...

BBC The forgotten volunteers - Indian army WWII part 4/5

BBC The forgotten volunteers - Indian army WWII part 4/5 Tube. Duration : 9.98 Mins.

The Indian Army during World War II in 1939, numbered just under 200000 men. By the end of the war it would become the largest volunteer army in history, rising to over 2.5 million men in August 1945. Serving in divisions of infantry, armour and a fledgling airborne force, they fought on three continents in Africa, Europe and Asia. The Indian Army fought in Ethiopia against the Italian Army, in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia against both the Italian and German Army, and, after the Italian surrender, the German Army in Italy. However the bulk of the Indian Army was committed to the fighting the Japanese Army, first during the defeat in Malaya and the retreat from Burma to the Indian border. Then after resting and refitting the victorious advance back into Burma, part of the largest British Empire army ever formed. These campaigns cost the lives of over 36000 Indian servicemen, another 34354 more were wounded, and 67340 became prisoners of war. Their valour was recognised with the award of 4000 decorations and 38 members of the Indian Army were recipients of the Victoria Cross or the George Cross. The Indian Army was an experienced force, having fought in the Third Afghan War and two major campaigns in Waziristan, during 19191920 and 19361939 and in smaller disputes on the North West Frontier since World War I. There was no shortage of manpower to call upon, but they did suffer from a shortage of skilled technical personnel. The conversion of the cavalry force to a mechanized tank ...
